The Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 at Capital One Arena on Wednesday in Alex Ovechkin's final NHL home opener. Tom Wilson had a goal and two assists. Pierre-Luc Dubois added a goal and an assist, and Anthony Beauvillier opened the scoring 23 seconds into the first period. Ryan Leonard scored on the power play at 3:55 of the third to make it 5-3. Logan Thompson made 27 saves for Washington. Bryan Rust scored in his season debut, and Tommy Novak and Nicholas Robertson also scored for Pittsburgh.
Kyle Connor scored twice, including the winner with one minute left, as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 at Canada Life Centre on Wednesday. Connor tipped in Neal Pionk's point shot in the second period and beat Mackenzie Blackwood from the slot at 19:00 of the third off a Mark Scheifele pass.
