The Detroit Pistons rallied to beat the Boston Celtics 121-113 in the NBA season opener on October 20. Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren scored 22 points apiece. Javonte Green added 19 points in the second half. Detroit erased a 22-point deficit and spoiled Paul George’s 38-point Boston debut.
The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the New York Knicks 106-100 in their season opener at Madison Square Garden. Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 28 points. Jaylen Brown added 19 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists in his 76ers debut. LeBron James opened his 24th NBA season with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists.
The Oklahoma City Thunder opened their season with a 116-104 road win over the San Antonio Spurs. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points to lead Oklahoma City. The Thunder beat the team that eliminated them in last season’s Western Conference finals.
