Troy beat Southern Miss 55-34 on Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy, Alabama, in the Sun Belt opener for both teams. Goose Crowder threw two touchdowns and ran for two more. The Trojans scored on all five first-half drives. Jordan Lovett opened the scoring with a 15-yard run and later caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Crowder. Crowder finished 18-of-21 for 225 yards and carried 17 times for 145 yards. Lovett added 142 rushing yards on 12 carries. Troy rolled up 437 rushing yards and improved to 3-2.
Southern Miss fell to 1-4 and lost its third straight game in Blake Anderson's first season. Landry Lyddy was 24-of-37 for 316 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Mario Sanders threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to AJ Little. Sanders also caught eight passes for 102 yards and a score and added a two-yard touchdown reception. The Golden Eagles could not keep pace with Troy's ground game despite 512 total yards.
Jacksonville State visits Kennesaw State on Wednesday in a Conference USA rematch of last season's championship game. Kickoff is 7 p.m. Eastern on CBS Sports Network at Walens Family Field at Fifth Third Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia. The Gamecocks are 3-2 and 1-0 in league play. The Owls are 1-3 and open conference play at home.
New Mexico State travels to Florida International for a Wednesday night Conference USA game at Pitbull Stadium in Miami. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. The Aggies are 2-3 and 1-0 in the conference after beating Western Kentucky in their opener. The Panthers are 2-2 and open league play.
