Novak Djokovic won a record-extending seventh China Open title in Beijing on Tuesday after Alex de Minaur retired at the start of the second set. Djokovic took the opening set 7-6(3) before both players called for medical timeouts. De Minaur returned to win the opening game of the second set but could not continue because of a groin issue. The title was Djokovic's 102nd at tour level and extended his perfect Beijing record to 34-0. He also became the first man in the Open Era to win a tour-level singles title in 21 consecutive seasons.
Carlos Alcaraz defended his Japan Open crown in Tokyo with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory over Jiri Lehecka. The No. 3 player lost serve in the opening game but rallied from 2-4 down in the first-set tiebreak. He broke in the seventh game of the second set to finish the 96-minute final. It was Alcaraz's first tour-level trophy since Doha in February after missing months with a wrist injury. He is the first man to repeat in Tokyo since Pete Sampras in 1993-94.
Seventh seed Karolina Muchova beat 12th seed Naomi Osaka 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(7) in 2 hours and 52 minutes to reach the WTA 1000 quarterfinals in Beijing. Muchova converted her ninth match point with a backhand volley winner after saving repeated chances in the third set. The 2024 Beijing runner-up trailed by breaks in the first and third sets before closing out the fourth-round win.
Fourth seed Mirra Andreeva beat Daria Snigur 6-2, 6-2 in round-of-16 play, breaking five times in just over an hour. No. 19 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over fifth seed Linda Noskova without dropping serve. Alexandrova reached her first Beijing quarterfinal and becomes the oldest first-time quarterfinalist in China Open history at 31.
The Rolex Shanghai Masters opens Wednesday with first-round singles on Stadium Court from 12 p.m. local time. Aleksandar Kovacevic meets Matteo Berrettini and Zhang Zhizhen faces Tomas Machac in the day session. Holger Rune plays Daniel Altmaier on Grandstand 2, and Wu Yibing meets lucky loser Michael Zheng not before 6 p.m. on Stadium Court.
In Beijing, 10th seed Iva Jovic faces eighth seed Iga Swiatek on Capital Group Diamond Court at 1 p.m. local time Wednesday in round-of-16 action. Third seed Coco Gauff meets 13th seed Elise Mertens not before 2:15 p.m., with Alina Charaeva against wild card Qinwen Zheng not before 7 p.m.
