On Friday night at the China Open in Beijing, Elise Mertens upset No. 8 seed Iga Swiatek 7-6(0), 6-3 in 1 hour and 50 minutes to reach her first China Open semifinal. Mertens won 87 percent of her first-serve points and did not face a break point. She has now beaten three Grand Slam champions in a row at the event and will face wild card Qinwen Zheng.
Earlier Friday in Beijing, Qinwen Zheng defeated No. 6 seed Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6(8) in 1 hour and 47 minutes. Zheng took the first set with three breaks and held through a tight second set before converting her second match point in the tiebreak. The win sent her to a fourth WTA 1000 semifinal.
At the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Friday, Hubert Hurkacz beat Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 in 87 minutes for his first win in nine tries against the Serbian. The 2023 champion won 82 percent of first-serve points and runs an eight-match streak at Qi Zhong. Hurkacz opens the third round against wild card Yi Zhou.
Zhou earned that meeting by upsetting No. 24 seed Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(7), 3-6, 7-6(1) in the night session. The world No. 277 saved three set points in the first-set tiebreak and raced to 5-0 in the third-set tiebreak before closing with 14 aces.
Alexander Zverev stumbled chasing a backhand at 6-4, 5-5 but recovered to defeat wild card Yibing Wu 6-4, 7-6(4) in 1 hour and 36 minutes. No. 3 seed Ben Shelton celebrated his 24th birthday with a 6-3, 7-6(6) win over Daniel Altmaier, his 40th tour-level victory this season.
Saturday semifinals in Beijing start on Capital Group Diamond Court after 1 p.m. local time. No. 4 seed Mirra Andreeva meets No. 26 seed Nikola Bartunkova not before 3 p.m. Zheng and Mertens are scheduled not before 7 p.m.
Saturday in Shanghai, Stadium Court singles start at 12 p.m. local with Felix Auger-Aliassime against Camilo Ugo Carabelli. No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz faces Juan Manuel Cerundolo not before 6 p.m. On Grandstand 2, No. 5 Daniil Medvedev opens against Jan-Lennard Struff at noon.
